8 Day Trekking Trip to the Sierra Nevada | April, May, September and October 2024

Join Britton Outdoors on one of our trekking trips in the Sierra Nevada Spain.

Join Britton Outdoors in 2024 for a trekking trip to the Sierra Nevada, Spain. This wonderful trip will include four spectacular walks picked out for the dramatic scenery. Each walk will be in a different location with contrasting terrain, forestry tracks, open mountain side, valleys, gorges and high mountains. The highest walk will include a summit of Pico de Veleta (second highest peak on the Iberian Peninsula) at 3,394metres.

At the heart of our philosophy, at Britton Outdoors, is the idea of sustainable tourism in rural environments - both in Ireland and in Spain. Like many small villages, the economy of Monachil at the foot of the Sierra Nevada has suffered due to the Covid pandemic and climate change. Traditionally many people’s livelihoods are dependent on the ski season which unfortunately every year gets shorter. Our idea is to help bring new life to Monachil in the form of our trekking tours. Our hikers stay in the local hotel and we employ local people who think along the same lines as we do. We want you to experience life in a typical Andalusian Mountain village, enjoy the amazing surroundings, drink in what Monachil has to offer and support the local economy while doing so.

We have factored in some rest time to relax and explore the local village of Monachil, where you will be staying. The trekking days will be Day 2,3, 5 &6 with two full days off from trekking to give you time to pop into Granada to explore the famous Alhambra, Albaicin, take a segway tour, visit the Turkish baths or a tapas tour all at your own pace.

The trip is aimed at walking clubs and groups of hikers. We mainly work with small groups from 10-14 however if you have a larger group, we are happy to work with you. The walks can cater for all groups of walkers (A, B or C). The below itinerary was developed for a club of moderate (B) walkers.

Our coordinator in Spain (Mary) has been living in the village of Monachil for a number of years and has lots of local knowledge and we have a local walking guide (English speaking) with intimate knowledge of the mountains for each of the treks.

Clubs can contact us to select dates to suit the club. We usually try to keep trips to March/April and Sept/Oct in order to avoid the heat of the summer.

Here are some frequent questions & answers

  • Will I be fit enough?

This is a very personal question as each person will have a different understanding of their fitness. As a rule of thumb, if you can do a 5/6hr walk in the Irish hills you should be able for any of the walks we will be doing on the trip.

  • Will it be very hot?

We try to run the trips on the shoulder seasons to avoid the really hot days. March – May you could expect a range of temperatures from 15 – 25 degrees. The September to Novemebr trips you could expect roughly the same 25 degrees dropping to 15 degrees nearer to November.

  • I have never walked in hot weather. Is it very different/hard to walk in the heat?

Depending on the weather during the week over there, a four-hour hike can feel quite long if it is very hot so my recommendation is to bring walking poles, sunhats and a water bladder so you can keep hydrated as you walk. Bringing a few sachets of dioralyte is also very handy. Once you drink plenty and take your time/pace yourself you should be fine.

  • I have never been above 3,000metres before, what will it feel like?

Altitude can affect each person differently. This hike will be slow and steady. You may feel a little breathless, some people have slight headaches or a slight dizziness. This is normal enough and it is important to just take your time. Anyone that was with us on our May trip that had these feelings just took it slowly and once they were at the top and sitting, they were fine. There were no issues coming down and everyone felt fine. It is one of the longer days walking, however we will make sure to have a rest day prior to this hike so you will be starting fresh.

  • Is the Itinerary set-in stone/can I opt out of a day’s walking if I am tired?

The itinerary is for two or three days walking then a break and another two days walking. If someone wants to take a day off themselves and not walk that is completely fine. Not everyone may have walked for two/three days in a row so don't worry if you think you might want an extra rest day you can decide that on the trip.

  • Is the first day long or will we have time to adjust to the heat?

The first day’s walking is approx. 4hrs and easy enough terrain. It is mainly about getting to know the group. It also gives the guide time to speak with each person and check they are happy and if we feel we need to change some of the walks to suit the group then we can do that.

  • Should I book flights once I pay my deposit?

Please don’t book flights until you have heard from Britton Outdoors that we have met the minimum numbers and the trip is definitely going ahead. We cannot refund anyone’s flights.

  • What if the trip is cancelled by Britton Outdoors?

If Britton Outdoors cancels the trip, then you will be reimbursed fully. If you need to postpone/cancel your trip the terms and conditions document covers the refund policy.

  • How big will the group be?

Maximum numbers for the trip is 14.

  • Can we go as a group?

Yes, you can book in as a group. Depending on the numbers in the group we can tailor the trip to suit your needs so please get in touch with us prior to booking.

In May this year I had the most fantastic time with Mark and a small group of lovely people trekking in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, based in Granada.
We had the best time ever.
Great walks, fantastic scenery, lots of laughs, and some yummy food.
I look forward to meeting up again with Britton Outdoors for yet another great adventure.

I have just returned from a very well organised trip to Sierra Nevada. Britton Outdoors could not have done anything else for the group. The travel itinerary put in place suited all our needs and the local guide ensured we all got to see what Sierra Nevada has to offer
