This is a very personal question as each person will have a different understanding of their fitness. As a rule of thumb, if you can do a 5/6hr walk in the Irish hills you should be able for any of the walks we will be doing on the trip.
8 Day Trekking Trip to the Sierra Nevada
Guided Adventures for All Walking Levels
Join Britton Outdoors for an unforgettable trekking experience in the Sierra Nevada, one of Europe’s most dramatic and diverse mountain ranges. From peaceful valley trails to high-mountain summits above 3,000 metres, our trips are designed for walking clubs and groups looking for expertly guided adventures in a stunning Andalusian landscape.
We offer a range of trekking packages graded by Mountaineering Ireland standards—from Moderate (A & B) through Difficult to Strenuous winter trekking—so every group can choose the level that suits their experience and fitness.
All trips are eight days and based in the beautiful mountain village of Monachil, just outside Granada.
Our Approach: Sustainable, Local & Authentic
At Britton Outdoors, sustainable tourism is at the heart of what we do. By partnering with local guides, restaurants and accommodation providers, our trips directly support the rural economy of Monachil.
You’ll stay in a family-run hotel, enjoy authentic meals in local restaurants (if your group chooses the meal package), and explore the landscape alongside knowledgeable, English-speaking guides who live and work in the region.
What to Expect on Our Trips
Each itinerary includes:
- Arrival & transfer from Málaga Airport to Monachil
- Five fully guided trekking days, tailored to your group’s chosen grade
- A rest day to explore Granada, visit the Alhambra or Hammam Al Ándalus, or simply relax in the village
- Local walking guides with extensive knowledge of the Sierra Nevada
- Flexible pacing, with a warm-up “test route” at the start of each trip to assess group dynamics
- Optional meal package: one arrival meal plus five post-hike meals in hand-picked village restaurants
All routes are sample itineraries and may be adapted depending on weather, conditions, and guide assessments.

FAQs
Here are some frequent questions & answers
-
Will I be fit enough?
-
Will it be very hot?
We try to run the trips on the shoulder seasons to avoid the really hot days. March – May you could expect a range of temperatures from 15 – 25 degrees. The September to Novemebr trips you could expect roughly the same 25 degrees dropping to 15 degrees nearer to November.
-
I have never walked in hot weather. Is it very different/hard to walk in the heat?
Depending on the weather during the week over there, a four-hour hike can feel quite long if it is very hot so my recommendation is to bring walking poles, sunhats and a water bladder so you can keep hydrated as you walk. Bringing a few sachets of dioralyte is also very handy. Once you drink plenty and take your time/pace yourself you should be fine.
-
I have never been above 3,000metres before, what will it feel like?
Altitude can affect each person differently. This hike will be slow and steady. You may feel a little breathless, some people have slight headaches or a slight dizziness. This is normal enough and it is important to just take your time. Anyone that was with us on our May trip that had these feelings just took it slowly and once they were at the top and sitting, they were fine. There were no issues coming down and everyone felt fine. It is one of the longer days walking, however we will make sure to have a rest day prior to this hike so you will be starting fresh.
-
Is the Itinerary set-in stone/can I opt out of a day’s walking if I am tired?
The itinerary is for two or three days walking then a break and another two days walking. If someone wants to take a day off themselves and not walk that is completely fine. Not everyone may have walked for two/three days in a row so don't worry if you think you might want an extra rest day you can decide that on the trip.
-
Is the first day long or will we have time to adjust to the heat?
The first day’s walking is approx. 4hrs and easy enough terrain. It is mainly about getting to know the group. It also gives the guide time to speak with each person and check they are happy and if we feel we need to change some of the walks to suit the group then we can do that.
-
Should I book flights once I pay my deposit?
Please don’t book flights until you have heard from Britton Outdoors that we have met the minimum numbers and the trip is definitely going ahead. We cannot refund anyone’s flights.
-
What if the trip is cancelled by Britton Outdoors?
If Britton Outdoors cancels the trip, then you will be reimbursed fully. If you need to postpone/cancel your trip the terms and conditions document covers the refund policy.
-
How big will the group be?
Maximum numbers for the trip is 14.
-
Can we go as a group?
Yes, you can book in as a group. Depending on the numbers in the group we can tailor the trip to suit your needs so please get in touch with us prior to booking.
In May this year I had the most fantastic time with Mark and a small group of lovely people trekking in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, based in Granada.
We had the best time ever.
Great walks, fantastic scenery, lots of laughs, and some yummy food.
